SAf 8th Annual Community of Practice Meeting

Monday, September 22, 2014 to Friday, September 26, 2014

The Eighth Southern Africa Community of Practice (CoP) meeting was held in Maputo, Mozambique. Part of the SAf CoP strategy is to deepen the engagement of farmers in research activities. To that end, a scoping study was recently commissioned to assess the potential for working with FRNs in the region. Meeting highlights included the discussion of a new cross-regional project on leadership managed by PICO-Eastern Africa; establishment of working groups on plant breeding, pest management, and integrated soil fertility management; and launch of an award for best student presentation, established to honor Suma Mwaitulo, a student at Sokoine University of Agriculture, who sadly passed away last year. Beatrice Mwaipopo was the worthy 2014 winner for her presentation on characterization of Alectra vogelii strains by using molecular markers in selected parts of Malawi and Tanzania.
